Mourning Glove (detail)
Harrogate's air 'dry, pure, bracing and extremely invigorating' was promoted as a tourist attraction in Victorian times. This led me to consider whether the town's residents lived longer due to the quality of it's air. A list of aged people, long resident in the town, was made in 1868. It included 44 females and 35 males aged 70 - 94.
Mourning Glove celebrates the long life of Hannah Blackburn who passed away at Park Parade on April 23rd 1868, aged 95 years. It is made up and embroidered with human hair, referencing Victorian memento jewellery and mourning costume.
